Sustainable Communities Summit 2010 will be May 6-7
The Leon County Commission will be hosting the Sustainable Communities Summit 2010 to engage residents and businesses on developing a sustainable community, county officials announced Friday.
The summit will be held May 6 and 7 at the Florida State University Turnbull Center. Guests will include consultants, independent produce growers, businesses, entrepreneurs and representatives from government, education and civic groups, officials said.
“We have not one but two world-renowned authors who will contribute to our event — John Robbins, heir to the Baskin-Robbins empire, and Bill McKibben, creator of 350.org,” said Maggie Theriot, sustainability coordinator for the county. “The event will also include a remarkable 30 breakout sessions, allowing attendees to delve into the nuts and bolts of a comprehensive sustainable community.”
Session topics include green-label jargon, community gardens, the impact of shopping and investing locally, “Gardening 101,” policies and regulations on food sales, keeping college talent local and small-business marketing.
“This summit is really for everyone — curious beginners and seasoned professionals alike, especially citizens interested in what they can personally do to strengthen their community,” said Commission Chairman Bob Rackleff.
Over the past few years, the county has taken steps toward sustainability, including creating an Office of Sustainability, reusing rainwater, managing fuel systems and earning landfill carbon credits.
General registration is $45, though students can register for $20. A continental breakfast and a lunch of organic and locally grown ingredients are included. Visit www.LeonCountyFL.gov/Summit or call 606-5380.
