Get to know your greenway

Bicyclists, runners, hikers, nature lovers and others who enjoy open land and free space to roam are in for a treat this weekend.

Leon County Parks & Recreation hosts the 2010 Greenway Tour on Saturday and invites the public to get in on the fun. The tour will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the J.R. Alford Greenway on Pedrick Road.

According to Parks and Recreation director Pat Plocek, this family-friendly tour will publicize the vast amount of natural land available for recreation in Leon County.

He said there also will be free food, along with games and activities for children, including face-painting and a bounce house.

“It’s a fun day to bring people out to make them familiar with our greenway systems,” Plocek said. “There will be informational tables and different trails set up. There also will be a narrated hayride to let people know what they can do there and get views of the greenway.”

Plocek said greenways are large natural areas that promote wildlife habitats and vegetation, and provide trails for different activities, including horseback riding. The J.R. Alford Greenway and the Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway are the two main locations in the county.

Judy Alexander, president of Gulf Winds Track Club, said members have been running at these greenways for almost as long as they’ve been open to the public.

“They are beautiful in their natural state,” Alexander said. “On any given day there’s a group of runners who go there.”
